Frequently Asked Questions About Caravel Law

What is Caravel Law?

Building on 10 years of solid success as part of Cognition LLP, Caravel Law is an innovative legal solutions provider structured to deliver legal services exclusively to Enterprise Clients. At Caravel Law, we connect experienced, business savvy lawyers with organizations looking for dedicated, tech enabled and cost-efficient legal solutions. While the name may be new, the premise is the same: we focus on happy clients and happy lawyers.

Why are you doing this?

We’ve launched Caravel Law to focus exclusively on all of our clients who don’t have on-staff general counsel. We believe that aligning our resources to this new exclusive customer focus will help us more clearly understand the specific needs of businesses who don’t have on-staff legal counsel so we can deliver better, more responsive legal solutions.

The goal of Caravel Law is to live up to our Charter value to “be in the business” and our mission to deliver “Your Business. Your Counsel. Your Way.”

Where did the name Caravel come from?

A Caravel was a small, fast, Spanish or Portuguese sailing ship of the 15-17th centuries. It had limited space for cargo and crew, but was agile and therefore successful. In fact, it was far easier to navigate than larger ships and was the first to sail into the wind. Its shallow keel also allowed it to sail up river in shallow water, where larger ships were unable to maneuver. We believe that the name Caravel Law is representative of our ability to navigate the legal solutions industry and charter a new course in NewLaw, focusing on providing legal solutions to businesses that do not have in-house legal counsel resources, and once again leaving traditional law firms behind.

Will I get to keep working with my current Cognition lawyer/legal team?

Yes. We’re happy to confirm that much of what we’ve done so successfully within Cognition LLP for the last 10+ years is staying the same within Caravel Law.

You’ll still be served by the same best of breed lawyers – the same trusted advisors you know and love. We will also continue to bring on new lawyers to better service your needs.

Will I still get the same great pricing?

Yes Caravel Law will continue to give clients the unique Value-Based Billing System, and the same great pricing – one-third to half the cost of BigLaw – that were offered under Cognition LLP.

Will work on my ongoing file continue without any negative impact?

Yes. As a client of Caravel Law, you’ll still be served by the same savvy lawyers – the same trusted advisors you know and love. This change will be seamless as far as the provision of legal solutions. Your ongoing work will continue without a hitch.

Will I need to sign a new engagement letter?

Caravel Law will be reaching out to clients to get new engagement letters signed to continue providing the same great Cognition LLP service. We’ll be in touch to facilitate this process, but in the meantime, please note that all existing engagement agreements have been assigned to Caravel Law Professional Corporation as of December 1, 2015. Please make any upcoming payments to Caravel Law Professional Corporation.

Will the physical location of the Caravel Law office change?

No, the Caravel Law office will remain at 366 Adelaide St. W., Suite LL01 (416-348-0313).

Is this a real change – or just a single team operating under two names?

Yes – it’s a real change – the creation of separate businesses to focus on our two main client groups. Caravel Law focuses exclusively on all of our clients who don’t have on-staff general counsel.

We believe that aligning our resources to this new exclusive customer focus will help us more clearly understand the specific needs of businesses so we can deliver better, more responsive legal solutions. Your lawyers will stay the same. The great lawyers who were part of the Cognition team now will work for all clients – both Cognition Axiom Inc. and Caravel Law clients.

Why should I choose Caravel Law?

Retaining a traditional law firm or hiring full-time, in-house counsel is too expensive for most start-ups and smaller or medium sized companies and organizations who need to make every dollar count.

Working with Caravel Law saves the average business tens of thousands of dollars each year, providing practical business value.
